Thermoplastic (VS “thermoset”) describes how the ABS plastic responds to heat. A thermoplastic material becomes liquid when heated to a certain temperature level (105 degrees Celsius in the case of ABS material).

Legos are injection molded. Silos of material are available with pipes that feed plastic granules to the molding machines. Each silo holds up to 33 tons of granules. The molding process is almost completely automated. The molding machines heat up the granules to a temperature of about 450°F (230°C). The plastic is then fed into molds.

ABS has a strong resistance to corrosive chemicals and/or physical impacts. It is very easy to machine and has a low melting temperature making it particularly simple to use in injection molding manufacturing processes or 3D printing on an FDM machine. Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) is often used to make light, rigid, molded products such as piping, automotive body parts, wheel covers, enclosures, protective head gear, and toys including LEGO bricks. This ABS has a high Melt Flow Index (MFI=34) which helps it flow better in our machines. Note: ABS will require the mold to be pre-heated. The color is WHITE but it has a slight tint of GREY.
